Local Resident Earned $250 Grant for WCFB*
Gail Macioce, an agent emeritus with Prudential’s Irwin office, located at 504 Fifth Street, has recently earned a $250 grant for The Westmoreland County Food Bank in recognition of her volunteer work with the organization.

The Westmoreland County Food Bank is a private, nGail Macioceot-for-profit organization that supplies food to hungry people through a network of food assistance programs in Westmoreland County. They serve over 7,000 disadvantaged families each month. The WCFB believes that by pooling together all of the community resources, they can make a significant difference in the fight against hunger.

Macioce, who joined Prudential in 1982, has qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table and she is a member of the Irwin Business & Professional Association; and also has earned the LUTCF (Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow) and CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) industry designations.  She is active with the Mon Yough Community Singers and the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

“April is the Month of the Young Child. The theme this year is ‘Bring Communities Together for Children-Children Bring Communities Together.’ I want the children to be very involved in this activity and understand what a difference they are making in the community,” said Georgine Hallam, coordinator of the Seton Hill University Early Childhood Programs and director of the Child Development Center. “Community service and service learning are hallmarks of the Seton Hill experience, no matter how young or old the students are.”

The Child Development Center is located on the Seton Hill University campus. It is part of the Education Program of Seton Hill University and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Extension of Enhanced Tax Deductions for Donors
As part of the Wall Street "bailout" package, a tax extension has been given to food donors.  As you may recall, the provisions that were enacted in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 expired on Dec. 31, 2007.  This new law will extend an enhanced tax deduction for food donations to all business taxpayers from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2009, meaning that the law will be retroactive and available for donations already made to your food bank this year.  The legislation enables all business taxpayers, including farmers, franchisees, ranchers and other small business owners, to continue taking an enhanced tax deduction that is equal to the cost of their food product plus ? of the additional fair market value appreciation not to exceed twice the cost. Click here for a sample calculation.  The legislation also allows qualified ranchers and farmers to deduct more than 10% of their income for the 2008 calendar year if they donate food that is worth more than that amount.  Typically, business taxpayers are only allowed to donate 10% of their income, so we are hopeful that this exception for farmers and ranchers will provide more sources of local donations from the agriculture industry for all food banks.
