President Obama Talks Food Banks

Last week as President Obama addressed the state of the economy, he acknowledged that many Americans are struggling with hunger and are turning to food banks for help.  But as those people reach out, he noted, food banks across the country are often unable to keep up with demand.  Watch the videos today!

Plant a Row for Hunger

fresh produceFresh produce provides much needed nutrients to our clients and is in demand at food banks across the country.  Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover produce from farms or gardens after they have been harvested.  We are currently looking for opportunities and volunteers to glean in Westmoreland County. We are asking local farmers or home gardeners to consider planting extra and donating some of their fresh produce for the hungry.

Due to the downturn of our economy, many kind-hearted individuals have shown interest in planting an extra row in their gardens to help those in need.  If you own a local farm or garden and are considering donating your leftover produce to WCFB, please contact Louise Wilhelm at (724) 468-8660 ext. 13 or email her at louise@westmorelandfoodbank.org.  She can coordinate a gleaning opportunity and possibly provide volunteer gleaners to help if needed.  All donors are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act of 1996 from civil or criminal liability, when they donate in good faith to a nonprofit food organization such as ours.   Anyone interested in volunteering for a gleaning opportunity should also contact Louise, to be placed on a call list, when an opportunity arises.

People Helping People
As you may have heard, the Westmoreland County Food Bank has started a Pilot Project in the Jeannette area.  This project is being funded through the United Way and was started after a Gap Study found that there are approximately 40,000 additional people in Westmoreland County that qualify for food but are not currently receiving it.  We are now moving into the action phase of this project.  We need an additional 96,000 pounds of food every year to feed 360 individuals a year.  This amount of food will cost us $143,000.
